Medical workers often need additional protection from the blood and bodily fluids that they frequently encounter when on duty, and with NFPA 1999 clothing, they will have that protection. This standard was first established in 1992 by the National Fire Protection Association for emergency protective gear worn by EMTs, firefighters and other first responders. The latest version came out in 2018 and is the most widely used standard for manufacturing apparel that will prevent contact with blood-borne or airborne pathogens. Using these garments during patient care will resist the spreading of viruses, parasites, bacteria and other potentially harmful microbes.

NFPA 1999-2018 is known in full as the Standard on Protective Clothing and Ensembles for Emergency Medical Operations. It sets minimum whole-body design, performance, testing and documentation requirements for fabrics and materials to block blood or bodily fluids from reaching the skin. This includes both penetration resistance and garment integrity, i.e. not allowing leaks via the seams or closures. It also sets down optional conditions for providing limited protection from common accident chemicals and CBRN agents. The 2018 edition updates and revises certain testing procedures such as breaking strength and cut resistance. The NFPA 1999 standard applies to every type of emergency medical garment along with footwear, accessories and protective ensembles.
