The most important thing for a public safety worker who is in close proximity to vehicle traffic is being seen by motorists. Oralite® retroreflective technology is used around the world by responders who need additional visibility. Originally developed by Orafol® more than 55 years ago, Oralite has evolved to meet the needs of traffic workers and of nationally recommended standards. By improving visibility for motorists, Oralite increases response time and decreases the risk of accidents. Blauer uses Oralite striping and lining on many of our high-visibility outerwear vests for police, fire and security works who are on or near roadways at any time of day.
What is Oralite?
Two different technologies can be used to create Oralite retroreflective material. Both versions reflect light beams from headlights or flashlights back to the source so the material – and the person wearing it – is visible from a greater distance. Glass bead reflective technology is the oldest and simplest way to enhance visibility, using spherical beads that are packed tightly together. A more modern and more efficient retro-reflection option is prismatic tape, which contains cube corner microprisms. Each technology is used in Oralite personal safety apparel and is often deployed on traffic control signs so they can be seen at night and on cloudy days.
Oralite Reflective Apparel from Blauer
A number of different Oralite public safety vests are offered by Blauer that meet ANSI 107-2015 Type P Class 2 standards for roadway workers. Most of our Oralite safety vests use crosswalk pattern prismatic tape that is coated to resist damage from UV rays or chemical solvents. We have zip-front safety vests that won’t randomly fall off while on duty and breakaway safety vests that come apart at the shoulders and waist if you get snagged on a care. You can also get customized police Oralite vests, sheriff safety vests and fire safety vests. Don them right over your regular uniform or outerwear so you’ll be seen when you’re on duty.
