ANSI/ISEA 107 was developed by the International Safety Equipment Association in response to concerns that American workers who are exposed to low visibility hazards are not wearing appropriate visibility-enhancing apparel. The original standard was published in 1999 and was the first nationally recognized safety standard in the United States for visibility concerns. The current version of the standard was published in 2004 and addresses additional issues such as garment breathability that were not considered in the original edition. The revised version of the standard also expands the product coverage to include high-visibility headwear and includes additional testing procedures for knitted fabrics used as background material.

Alert! - Public safety professionals have until November 24, 2008 to comply with 23 CFR Part 634, which is the Federal Highway Administration's mandate that anyone working in or around federally subsidized roadways are required to wear ANSI 107-2004 Class II or III certified safety apparel. Departments and agencies do not comply with the mandate may face citations and financial penalties including loss of grant funding.
